Undo the two 10mm bolts holding the fuel rail in place, you can tilt it over for better access. Or even lift it up slightly, just holding down the injectors on 0-rings.
Works the other way round during normal running mate, when we smoke test we do a positive pressure test where the smoke blows out, when the engine is running its running the opposite under a vacuum. Still stands this could well be your issue.
This could well be the cause of all your issues. you'll be loosing vacuum and sucking air in! I think they're M7 nuts using a 11mm socket, very BMW specific.
