New headlights.

Fitted a new pair of after market headlights to the French zed at the weekend,in preparation for the "Control technique " and it's new life over there.

I wired in the halo rings easy enough,but these new ones don't have the powered adjustment so now there is a redundant 3 pin connector. They have a manual hight adjuster instead,but would be a faff to alter.
Does anyone know what hight etc the light beam should be set at for an mot ? Just so it's something like when it's tested in France , @t-tony .

Steve, have a look at this. if you have the flat of the beam just below parallel to the centre of the h/light bulb at about 300mm from the headlight lens this will be a basic starting point for adjustment. Would have been easier to fit stick on masks to give a flat top beam ?

I thought I had this problem too when I replaced my headlights with a similar (black) set. Ended up looking at the back on my OEM headlights and noticed you can removed the powered adjuster from them. Have you tried that yet? I'm pretty sure I found this out from the tinterweb, so I will try to find you a link.

I didn't think those stick on patches would be ok as it's going to be registered over there hence the French mot.

I'll adjust them to what you recommend so it should be near enough.

Yep @Bozzy, as I thought... Here's the 'How To' I followed to fit mine, including instructions on how to remove the OEM adjusters:

The electrical adjusters twist out of the old units and fit into the new ones so you can use them. I did on my Z3 with the aftermarket units I fitted. You sure there wasn't a way to convert the old lights for continental driving? Bit late now I know.

I didn't think they were adjustable for left/right hand drive tbh Tony.
I did post a wanted thread a while ago for lhd lights and no one mentioned anything about being able to alter them.

Just been out to the shed to see if I could remove the adjusters from the old units,as on David's link,they do simply twist and pull out .
I hasten to add the new lights don't come with any instructions or guidance what so ever .

The lesson here is,I should have asked on here before ordering and fitting them .

I also checked the rear lights,one was brighter than the other (tail lights).
One had a 21w brake light bulb fitted instead of a 5w,would have thought it would have been noticed on its mot that was done before we picked up the car from the dealer ?.

In the same positions on the new lights there will be something which twists out bayonet style just the same. You have to locate the "ball" end of the metal rod into the lug on the back of the reflector, a little grease helps here, then twist the motor back into the back of the unit. Hope that makes sense. Easier done with the units off the car TBH. I didn't realise you were doing this Steve or I would've said before. Also you should align the headlights themselves with the body lines using the plastic adjusters on the mounting screws if needed.

The stop light bulbs should be 21w and the position (side) lights only5w, so that when the stop light is on it shows brighter than the position light. Both stop lights should be brighter than side lights in other words.

Steve don't know if this would apply to any of the lights you have in the uk the basic beam pattern is like this with kick up to nearside to light up the left hand side of the road french one obviously the reverse and the left-hand drive one looks like the lower one.

On my projector style dip beam on my skoda on the of the inner part of the light where the bulb goes in there is a little metal lever and where you move it to the lower position it removes the kick up from the light leaving a beam pattern that is straight along the top projected edge.

I mentioned that Steve, and I assume that a "flat" beam image is acceptable in mainland Europe just as it is here. (pre Brexit anyway).
