Odometer not working...

The digital odometer on my 1999 2.5 Z3 is not working and I am looking to see if anyone has any suggestions how I troubleshoot it or If I need to replace it. The lower part of the odometer display that shows trip milage and remaining service life does come on but goes blank about 10 seconds after starting the engine. The trip reset button on the instrument cluster has no effect on any display. I have removed the instrument cluster and disassembled the odometer, cleaned all the contacts, reassembled it but to no effect. I understand there is a 'code' device in the instrument cluster and wonder if this is bad or it and the odometer are not communicating with each other?. The speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature and warning lights all work! Appreciate any comments, suggestions. Thank you.

The two bulbs behind can blow. You may be able to see the milage if you look really closely. It happened to mine, removing the cluster and replacing the bulb sorted it out.
