Hello all,

I am considering buying a set of these wheels. The set being sold are RS 765 (8J) with an ET (IS) or 47 - 17 inch rims.

Would the standard setup be square or staggered, and if staggered, what would be the width and RS number?

Does anybody have these fitted to thier Z3?

They are all stamped and marked as per a BMW Wheel so i presume they are original unless somebody can advise me otherwise.

Were they an option for the Z3?

The seller is asking ca £400, seems an ok price.

As ever any advice much appreciated.

As Andy has stated, that is cheap for these wheels, as long as they do not need a refurb. A refurb could cost upwards of £100+ per rim.

I would 'suspect' that the offered cost of £400 is based on the fact that this set may all be 7.5",

The correct set up should be 7.5" front and 8.5" rears. easily distinguished by the deeper dish and wider tyres (245 40 17) on the rear wheels.

They will look recessed on the rear if they are all 7.5" and you would have to fit a spacer to bring the wheel out to fill the arch,

I would guess that a set of Genuine 7.5 front and 8.5 rears in really good condition with no damage and the polished lip still showing would be circa £800,

** Many sets have been painted completely silver to disguise the corrosion on the outer lips.

Hope this helps

Looking at RealOEM , there seems to be 2 versions of type 42 wheels
The 16" are square set-up, whereas the 17" are staggered
As others have suggested, I would suggest you do a search in RealOEM for the specific model of your car for a more definitive answer

There were 2 main versions of the style 42 offered new at purchase for the Z3, regardless of year or engine size. 'Excluding M'.

To clarify,

1: All 7"x 16" solid wheels square set up

2: Bolted split rims 7.5" x 17" fronts, 8.5" x 17" rears,

" There was a very very rare option of an 8"x17" front for the early 1.8 and 1.9 85 32 9 408 691 I have only ever
seen 1 x set with 8" fronts with the 8.5" rears

There was no other style 42 option for the Z3

The E39 5 series however, customers were offered an option of 8" front and rear,

or 8|" front and 9" rears both in 17" and also 18"...........!!

Thank you for the replies, as ever, really useful.
I did a little more research the result being that these wheels would fit without problem.
My current style 55 wheels have an ET of 46 and these style 42's are 47. Despite the larger diameter and width of the style 42's the overall differences are minimal.
That said, the original BBS style 42's for the Z3 were staggered with a ET of 41, so with that in mind I will carry on looking. Thanks for all your comments.

In comparison to your current style 55 wheels, the 8x17 ET 47 rims (originally for the 3 series E46) will protrude 12 millimeters in the rear which will definitely look good.

Here's a picture of my own Z3 with style 55 wheels and with BBS with similar dimensions (8x17 ET 40).

See how the wheels fill out the rear wheel arch much nicer?

17x8 et 47….very rare e36 wheels.

Fitment will be fine on all 4 corners but won’t have the dish ratio that creates the nice aesthetic.

Considering how rare these are, £400 is good value. The e36 fraternity would beat doors down for them.

In a plot twist, these could a nice basis for a step-up lip and barrel set up for 17 to 18 inch. Costly and very much in the California show car realm.
