I supposed they would've needed a Crystal ball to know they were going to be a piece of that when they were first launched? And, to be fair, at the side of their competition in the early 80s, they weren't that bad.

I had a metro turbo... it went like stink .my mate had the montego turbo that st the time was unreal quick .
We had two Metros a Mk1 1litre HLE & a Mk2 1.3 City X. Both were good reliable cars that were cheap to run, good to drive & handled well, cheap & easy to fix if they did go wrong, the worst thing about them was that they rusted but so did everything else that was around at the time. We did a number of trips from North Yorkshire to Devon in the 1 litre, my brother who had an MG Metro couldn't keep up with it on the motorway! The 1.3 spent most of its life travelling from North Yorkshire to London & back & never missed a beat.
I once went to look at an almost new Metro in a garage, just a few months old, but when I lifted the bonnet there was rust everywhere! Never looked at another.
Never had any probs with rust under the bonnet with ours. The worst places were front wings & wheel arches.
The worst places for corrosion, which few people ever saw, was up under the front wings against the bulkhead. They kept me and my mate in work but only on their latter years. Outer sills would be next., but as I said not really any more so than Fiestas, Puntos etc.
