aaaaah interesting !.. I remember when you described it on your rebuild, and I couldn't get my head round that you could roller stuff which I took as seam sealer coming out of a tube... =))
 
I found the thinner that came with my epoxy was amazing for cleaning up polyurethane sealant like Tiger Seal (although I mainly used Puraflex 40 cos it was half the price)

Should’ve added to my workflow before that I also added seam sealer and rattle can top coat where needed (Topaz blue for inner sills, satin black for ARB etc)

yeah I remember the pics you posted and I have both of your journeys bookmarked ! :D
 
I was thinking ahead to when I do the underside... trying to search for the right paint code for the e-coat. I've got cans of Top Coat "Fiji Green" or "Fidschigrun"

but the underside is lighter....only colour that comes close is RAL 6019... which I think is the colour under the tank and the propshaft tunnel...

@Althulas yeah I wish BMW would publish a "body colour v e-coat" chart..... I searched for BMW RAL colours and found a chart which is where I got that from but doesn't say "and goes with these topcoats"... but, at the end of the day, if someone's questioning the colour of the underside... it means I've probably just run over them ! =))=))

Thought I'd try a test piece of Hammerite Black Smooth (while the kettle was boiling !) ….. this is at the "tacky dry" stage... must say it's a lot thinner than normal Hammerite but at the moment looks quite impressive in terms of shine and levelling

so....the next day...test piece fully dried....still looks great … BUT.. I'm a bit disappointed that I could literally scratch it with a fingernail... not what I expected from Hammerite.... seems multiple coats and maybe a layer of lacquer is required !!!

You need to leave Hammerstein for at 24 hrs to be touch dry and longer for it to be hardened.if applying a second coat it has to be quite soon after the first or at least a day after IIRC.

thanks mate.....yes I applied this layer yesterday evening....but I'll take your advice and do a full coat tomorrow on both springs..and leave them until next weekend...and repeat the nail test !

well this afternoon... I decided to complete the paint up of the springs in Hammerite smooth..... I'm still not convinced it's durable enough but I'll let it harden for a week and see if it passes the nail test.... this is the second coat...like a true Renaissance artist.... drink while you paint !

then it was onto coating the nearside trailing arm with POR15...this is in readiness for a couple of coats of Hammerite red oxide which I shall do tomorrow

POR15 coated and kept wet for 20 minutes, then washed off with plain water before drying with a heat gun

I have a feeling I might have to sacrifice the hub bearings in order the get the snapped handbrake cable bracket bolt out

only a brief visit today as I was busy recording songs.... so it was yet another coat of Hammerite on the coils....

aah..see I tried their website, turns out the "checkout" isn't really a checkout, it's a mechanism to ask about it..I thought I was buying some springs for £80...turns out it's just a request..and then you contact them, I asked about some shocks and never got a reply..might try their ebay then..
 
Another afternoon in the garage.... this time the focus is on the nearside trailing arm....

first job... bushes out, using the threaded bar technique

brackets wouldn't come off without "persuasion" and I certainly didn't want to snap the mount off !

Then it was time to take the knotted wheel, cup and carbide discs to this ...

Turned out nice again....got lucky twice... no cracks, no holes... oh.. apart from the bolt I snapped off :whistle: :whistle:
